Matching numbers: why they matter

How to read engine and chassis stamps, and what a mismatch costs.

“Matching numbers” means the major parts are the ones the car left the factory with. On a collectable car that can be a third of the price.

Where to look

The chassis number is on a plate and stamped into the body. The engine and gearbox carry their own stamps, often partly hidden by brackets or dirt.

Reading them

Factory records or a build sheet list the numbers each car was built with. Clubs and marque registries can often confirm them for a small fee.

What a mismatch costs

A period-correct replacement engine is not a disaster, but it should be priced in. On rare models the difference can be large, so get it in writing.

Restamped parts

Fresh, uneven or oddly deep stamps are a warning sign. When in doubt, ask a specialist to look before you pay a deposit.
